History

History of CIGGA

The International Conferences of Anarchist Geographers and Geographies (CIGGA) are an international scientific gathering devoted to the critical study of the relationships between geography, anarchisms, territory and social transformation. Since their first edition, they have sought to create a space for exchange among researchers from different disciplinary traditions and geographical contexts, bringing academic production into dialogue with experiences and debates arising from social movements.

The first edition was held in Reggio Emilia, Italy, in 2017. Since then, CIGGA has developed an itinerant and international character, with subsequent editions in Rabastens, France (2019); Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico (2021); Córdoba, Argentina (2023); and São Paulo, Brazil (2025), the latter held at the Universidade de São Paulo (USP). This trajectory has consolidated an international network of researchers interested in the relationships between geography and anarchisms, progressively broadening their debates and their scope.

CIGGA has a scientific, international, critical and interdisciplinary orientation, and constitutes a space for discussing concepts, theories, methodologies, experiences and practices linked to anarchist geographies. Its open character brings together contributions from geography as well as from other social sciences and fields of knowledge, fostering dialogue between different theoretical perspectives and territorial experiences.

The sixth edition of CIGGA will take place in Santiago de Chile in January 2028, continuing an international trajectory that began in Europe and later extended to Latin America. Holding it in Chile represents a new opportunity to strengthen international scientific exchange around anarchist and libertarian geographies, and to deepen the dialogue between research developed in Latin America and contemporary international debates in geography and the social sciences.
